A simple concept – fire up the iPod and post the first song that comes on.  Some days you might get more than one song, some days you might not.

verve

Number 5

History – The Verve – Taken from ‘A Northern Soul’ (1995)

As first songs of the day go, this is pretty hard to beat.  It is almost exactly as some chump from the Melody Maker wrote back in 1995 ‘an epic windswept symphony of strings, flailing vocals and staggeringly bitter sentiments’.  I’m not sure if this description includes the hand claps provided by Liam Gallagher – which he described once as ‘the best thing on the record’.

jack

Number 4

Temporary Ground – Jack White – Taken from ‘Lazaretto’ (2014)

‘Lazaretto’ is the second solo album from Jack White, it was apparently inspired by a series of short stories, poems and plays that Jack wrote when he was 19.  When I was 19 I wasn’t shut in a bedroom writing ‘poems’ which explains why I am not a multi millionaire rock star who is adored across the world.  In case you are interested, the female vocals are by Lillie Mae Rische.

frank

Number 3

Fields of June – Emily Barker and the Red Hand (feat Frank Turner) – Taken from ‘The Third Three Years’ (2014)

The Third Three Years is as the title suggests is a compilation of Frank Turners material that have not appeared on any of his studio albums over a three year period.   It includes several excellent cover versions of 70s ‘rock classics’.

elastica 2

Number 2

Smile – Elastica – Taken from ‘Elastica’ (1995)

I’m not sure that there are many people out there who need me to explain anything about Elastica and their debut album that hasn’t already been said.  But if you do – the debut album by Elastica contains 16 tracks, each of one them is a Britpop classic. You should buy it.

Crystal-Stilts

Number 1

Shattered Shine –Crystal Stilts – Taken from ‘Alight of Night’ (2009)

According to Wikipedia Crystal Stilts are a Booklyn based post punk band.  ‘Alight of Night’ was their debut album (and its excellent).  It’s more goth shoe gaze than post punk if you ask me.  Their third album expanded their sound to include country and folk.  I’ve never heard their third album.

Sorry…..

sorry

We’ve been away for a bit, it’s been a busy summer.  Firstly SWC broke his ankle, he was windsurfing in Morocco and fell off and the boom or the sail or something fell on it.  In true SWC style, he was a mile out to sea and a helicopter had to come from Spain to rescue him.  I’m sure he’ll tell you about it.  He’s been milking it a bit and is generally fine.  But I know he wants to tell you about the hashish smoking surgeon.

Secondly, I went to the World Cup, all of it.  I spent a month working in various parts of Russia and saw precisely two games of football.  Iran vs Portugal, which was fairly good and Sweden vs Switzerland, which wasn’t.  It was kind of last minute, I didn’t know I was going until two days before the thing started.  I’ll regale you all with tales of fried water rat very soon.

Thirdly and most importantly, KT announced a few weeks back that she is going to have a baby.  Which is just the best news, I’m so delighted for her and Dom, they will be tremendous parents.   She said it was ok to tell you all, as long as you all sent her flowers.

So in the mix of all that, the old blog kind of got forgotten about.  So I’d like to apologise to all the people who emailed us, asking where we were, I haven’t had the time to respond, sorry.  To all those who missed us (frankly you should have been out enjoying the sunshine).  Sorry.

We are sort of back, KT will be here when she can be, understandably she has other priorities right now, SWC is sort of fighting fit again.  Well, he’s never been fit, but you know what I mean.

The thing we had planned for the August Bank Holiday, a three day online music festival has been put back for a bit, sorry to anyone who planned stuff for it, I just haven’t had the time to give it the attention it deserves.

We will be posting very short posts (or I will be) for the next few weeks and then hopefully back up and running properly towards the end of August.

Sorry – Friends
