Cover Me – Number 34

American Girl – Frank Turner

Originally by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Also covered by Everclear, Taylor Swift and The Goo Goo Dolls (amongst others)

The original was of course by Tom Petty and is currently 76th on the Rolling Stone magazines list of Greatest Songs Ever.  It is described by some as ‘Rocks greatest ever non hit’ (although it was a Top 40 hit in the UK) as it failed to chart in American on release and only just scrapped the Top 100 on its rerelease some eighteen years later.  The song is now forever perhaps tinged with sadness as it was last song ever sung live by Tom Petty – on September 25th 2017 a week before he died in Los Angeles.  It also worth noting that the riff in the original ‘American Girl’ sounds a lot like the riff that The Strokes used in ‘Last Nite’.

Frank Turner’s version is rather lovely, appears on his ‘Third Three Years’ album.  We love a bit of Frank Turner around these parts and he has become something of a TSOBO favourite although this is the first time he has appeared on the page.  Frank is a very prolific singer and songwriter and is known for his cover versions of classic rock staples.  Here are two more for you, both of which could have featured in this rundown
